Connectedwiththisapparentselectiveactionwhichthemodemspecializationofoccupationsexerts,thereisafurther,andatfirstsightmoresingular,pointofdisparitybetweenthesocialistsandtheconservatives;andthisdifferencehasalsoacuriouscorrelationwiththedistributionofthemachineindustry。Inadegree,-slightanduncertain,perhaps,butsearcelytobemistaken,-thesocialistsandtheconservativesareapparentlyofdifferentracialantecedents。Ithasbeenseenabovethatthepropagandaismostvitalandwidespreadintheindustrialtowns,ascontrastedwiththeagriculturalcountry。

ButiftheresearchesofsuchstudentsasAmmon,Ripley,Lapouge,Closson,andothersthatmightbenamed,aretakenattheirfacevalue,itappearsthatthetownsdifferperceptiblyfromtheopencountryinpointofrace;andthatthemigrationfromthecountryintotheindustrialtownshasaselectiveeffectofsuchakindthatalargerproportionofoneracialstockthanofanotherresortstothetowns。Thetowns,inthosecountrieswheredataareavailable,showalargeradmixtureofthedolicho-blondstockthantheopencountry。Thisseemstoarguethatthedolicho-blondstock,ortheracialmixtureofthetownsinwhichthereisarelativelylargeadmixtureofthedolicho-blond,isperceptiblymoreefficientinthemachineindustries,morereadilyinclinedtothinkinmaterialisticterms,moregiventoradicalinnovation,lessboundbyconventionandprescription。Thisgeneralizationisstrengthenedbythefactthatthemoredolicho-blondregionsarealso,onthewhole,moresocialisticthanthoseinwhichthiselementislessinevidence。Atthesametimetheyareindustriallyinadvanceofthelatterinthematterofmachineindustry;andtheyarealsoProtestant(irreligious)
