Tothemodernsocialistallthisiscomingtobelessandlessconvincing。Inthisrespectthereisafairlywellmarkedprogressivechangeintheattitudeoftheprofessedsocialists。
Theirpositionisprogressivelylesscapableofbeingformulatedasabusinessproposition;theirdemandsareprogressivelymoredifficulttostateintheformofapecuniaryclaim。Theclaimtothefullproductoflabor,whichoncefilledalargeplaceinsocialisticclamorsandhadagreatcarryingforceduringtheearlierthree-quartersofthenineteenthcentury,hasgraduallyfallenintoabeyance,bothwiththeagitatorsandtheadherentsofthepropaganda,duringthelastgeneration。To-daythisclaimisanafterthoughtintheadvocate’spresentationofsocialism,morefrequentlythanitisapointofdeparturefortheargument,anditismademoreofbytheproselytes,whohavecarriedthemetaphysicsofitoverfromthecurrentcommonsenseofthebusinesscommunity,thanbythesocialistsofconfirmedstanding。
Theclaimtothefullproductisanarticleofnatural-rightsdogma,andassuchitisareminiscenceoftheinstitutionalsituationfromwhichsocialismdeparts,ratherthanafeatureoftheprospectivesituationtowhichsocialisticsentimentlooks。
Thelikeobsolescenceofthesenseofequityinownershipisvisibleintheattitudetakenbystrikersinthelarge,mechanicallyorganizedindustries,outsideoftheranksofavowedsocialism。Thesestrikersarelessandlessdeterredbyconsiderationsofvestedrights,propertyrights,owner’sinterests,andthelike。Theprinciplethatamanmaydowhathewillwithhisownislosingitsbindingforcewithlargeclassesinthecommunity,apparentlybecausethespiritualgroundonwhichreststhenotionof“hisown“isbeingcutawaybythelatter-dayexperienceoftheseclasses。Abridgmentofproprietarydiscretion,confiscationofproprietaryrights,isgrowinggraduallylessrepugnanttotheindustrialpopulace;andthequestionofindemnityforeventuallossismoreandmorefallingintoneglect。Withthesocialisticelementthequestionisnot,whatshallbedoneinthewayofreadjustmentofpropertyclaims,butwhatistobedonetoabolishthem。(20*)
