Itwasbythattimehardonteno’clock,andweturnedatonceintotheplaceofsale。TheFlyingScud,althoughsoimportanttoourselves,appearedtoattractaveryhumbleshareofpopularattention。Theauctioneerwassurroundedbyperhapsascoreoflookers-on,bigfellows,forthemostpart,ofthetrueWesternbuild,longintheleg,broadintheshoulder,andadorned(toaplainman’staste)withneedlessfinery。Ajaunty,ostentatiouscomradeshipprevailed。Betswereflying,andnicknames。

“Theboys“(astheywouldhavecalledthemselves)wereveryboyish;anditwasplaintheywerehereinmirth,andnotonbusiness。Behind,andcertainlyinstrongcontrasttothesegentlemen,IcoulddetectthefigureofmyfriendCaptainTrent,come(asIcouldverywellimaginethatacaptainwould)tohearthelastofhisoldvessel。Sinceyesterday,hehadriggedhimselfanewinready-madeblackclothes,notveryaptlyfitted;
