AndFoma\'sladywasastatelybrunette,cladallinblack。Dark-

complexioned,withwavylocks,shekeptherheadsoerectandhighandlookedateverythingaboutherwithsuchcondescendinghaughtiness,thatitwasatonceevidentthatsheconsideredherselfthemostimportantpersonthere。

Thecompanywereseatedontheextremelinkoftheraft,extendingfarintothesmoothexpanseoftheriver。Boardswerespreadoutontheraftandinthecentrestoodacrudelyconstructedtable;emptybottles,provisionbaskets,candy-

wrappersandorangepeelswerescatteredabouteverywhere。Inthecorneroftheraftwasapileofearth,uponwhichabonfirewasburning,andapeasantinashortfurcoat,squatting,warmedhishandsoverthefire,andcastfurtiveglancesatthepeopleseatedaroundthetable。Theyhadjustfinishedeatingtheirsturgeonsoup,andnowwinesandfruitswerebeforethemonthetable。

Fatiguedwithatwo-days\'spreeandwiththedinnerthathadjustbeenfinished,thecompanywasinawearyframeofmind。Theyallgazedattheriver,chatting,buttheirconversationwasnowandagaininterruptedbylongpauses。
