Whilethegalleryofhalfpennypicturesmademehappyalltheyearround,therewasanotherentertainmentwhichIfoundparticularlyattractiveinwinter,infrostyweather,whenthesnowlaylongontheground。Againstthefarwallstandsthefireplace,asmonumentalinsizeasatmygrandmother’s。Itsarchedcorniceoccupiesthewholewidthoftheroom,fortheenormousredoubtfulfilsmorethanonepurpose。Inthemiddleisthehearth,but,ontherightandleft,aretwobreast—highrecesses,halfwoodandhalfstone。Eachofthemisabed,withamattressstuffedwithchaffofwinnowedcorn。Twoslidingplanksserveasshuttersandclosethechestifthesleeperwouldbealone。Thisdormitory,shelteredunderthechimneymantel,suppliescouchesforthefavoredonesofthehouse,thetwoboarders。Theymustliesnuginthereatnight,withtheirshuttersclosed,whenthenorthwindhowlsatthemouthofthedarkvalleyandsendsthesnowawhirl。
